MARCOL identified an opportunity within the healthcare system in Germany that offered excellent care at a low cost. As a result, in 2009 with partner Advent International, it acquired Median Kliniken (Median) – Germany’s leading rehabilitation care provider with 27 hospitals.
Since the acquisition, MARCOL and Advent International then supported Median in its regional expansion, in diversifying the Group’s therapy range and in strengthening its position in the German rehabilitation market.
Over five years, Median acquired 18 clinics and invested more than €100million in the modernisation of its facilities. The focus at all times was on providing the highest-quality post-acute rehabilitation. Between 2009 and 2014, the Group increased the number of clinics from 27 to 45 and the number of beds from 6,300 to 9,500. The number of employees grew from approximately 3,700 to about 7,500.
MARCOL and Advent International signed an agreement to sell to leading private-equity firm, Waterland. Today, Median has developed a nationwide presence in Germany and is one of the partners of choice for hospitals and payors.
